[Fortunately, Sollux's little run-in with the Yamasks had not been televised at any point. This is mostly because he was too busy hiding in corners and screaming about THE VOICESSSSSS. But before that had happened, he had also caught one of the little buggers, and it was now sitting in its Pokeball like a child in time-out because Sollux was angry at the Yamask that had made him flip his shit, and therefore the entire species had to suffer for it. He's really a very mature adult. Aren't journeys supposed to make people grow up?]

[But that is all in the past now, thank god, and as the feed begins, he's just sitting in the Pokemon Center's lobby petting his Absol. D'aww. How cute.]

...So.

[He glances over at a laptop sitting nearby. Of course this little nerd had bought himself a real live computer, even though he has a perfectly functional Gear right there.]

Sollux Captor reporting live from the shitty chunk of rock that is Cinnabar Island. According to everything I've seen and heard so far, there's supposed to be a Gym around here, but all I see is a Pokemon Center and a hell of a lot of Krabbies. What's the deal?

[France's face is one of utterly disappointed shock.]

I thought it was a resort island!

[The response comes from outside. Sollux gives France a sweeping view of the completely barren rock surrounding the Pokemon Center before turning back to his actual face.]

If this is your idea of a 'resort island', then somewhere, there is something seriously wrong.

[France's hand drags over his face like he's attempting to wipe the image away. Of course, it doesn't work, and he's set to pouting, discontent rippling off him.]

Of course not. That looks like how I've always imagined Pompeii after Vesuvius.

[He huffs, his next words more of a muttering to himself than to Sollux.]

The entire reason I went to Kanto in the first place... This place is truly Hell.

No idea what Pompeii or Vesuvius is, but you know, okay.

[He continues talking as he walks back inside the Pokemon Center, the Absol laying her head in his lap quickly after he sat down.]

Yeah, I'd be the first one to agree with you on that. [Regardless of whether he thought it was hellish or not.] But why'd you come all the way to Kanto and not go to Cinnabar? Did you just arrive?

[France looks momentarily surprised before waving his hand vaguely as if trying to indicate something only he can see.]

Vesuvius was a volcano that erupted and buried a number of populous cities and towns before my time. Beneath the rock and ash that formed, those and that which were buried remained preserved in their final moments for over one and a half millennia.

[He pauses, seemingly turning over something that those words stirred inside of his head. The moment passes, and he turns his full attention back to Sollux, curiosity now sparking in his eyes.]

No, I've been here for just over two years now. I got to Lavender Town but had to go back to New Bark for someone who returned. You say that there's only a Pokemon Center and Krabbies there now? Do you know if anyone's tried to salvage the place?

[Sollux just looks at the screen for a moment, stunned. Any reasonable person would think it was because he felt bad for all those people who died; that would be incorrect. Powers from a past life had trained him to think in terms of how long it takes people to die -- because as they die, he heard their thoughts -- and all the people trapped in that rock and ash? They'd be saying the same thing for fifteen hundred years.]

[...But he snaps out of that when France starts talking again. Oh, conversation going on, right.]

I dunno, I guess someone has. There's sone bigass construction site over a little ways, but I don't know what they're building.

[It's probably better that France interprets that expression as stunned; if he actually knew why Sollux reacted like that, he would be irrevocably creeped out. Instead, he listens intently to Sollux's observation, his curiosity blossoming into something closer to coveting interest.]

I've always enjoyed excavating lost civilization. Does anyone know how long ago the volcano erupted?

The Gym is now on the Seafoam Islands. Do not visit the volcano without Fire-types.

And how come I need a Fire-type? [He has one already, but this was supposed to be a Fire-type Gym Leader, right?]

Well, it's no trouble if you have none in the first place. In fact, Water-types would be safer to bring if you have any. But if you have Fire-types and decide to leave them in the PC? Be ready for complaints and chewed belongings.

[Of course, that might be because Cecil's Fire-types at the time were both dogs.]

Yeah, I have a Water-type. And a Ground-type too. I'm alright for coverage.

[After all, he'd been given that Typhlosion as a gift from one of his previous selves in Johto, and the bastard was like level 70 or something. With both of those you should have little trouble with the local fauna, unless those two are particularly young. And your Fire-type will certainly appreciate the heat and Pokémon found there.

[And maybe find a ladyfriend, but that might not be a positive.]

Great, thanks for that. [Except not really. They're actually two of his oldest Pokemon, one of whom is his starter, so he didn't really have much concern about the Gym itself. It was just... difficult to get there.]

...You fought this Gym Leader, right? Did you happen to ask him why the fuck he put his Gym in a volcano?
